Thrombolytic therapy is a critical option for managing severe pulmonary embolism cases. This therapy involves the administration of medication that dissolves blood clots obstructing the pulmonary arteries. In severe cases of pulmonary embolism, where there is significant hemodynamic instability or when the patient is at a high risk of death, rapid restoration of blood flow is essential to prevent further complications, such as cardiac arrest or severe right ventricular dysfunction. Thrombolytics work quickly to break down the clot, significantly improving blood flow and oxygen delivery to the lungs and other organs.

Oxygen treatment is often used to manage hypoxemia in patients with pulmonary embolism, but it does not address the underlying problem of the obstructed blood vessels. Physical therapy may play a role in rehabilitation following an embolic event, but it is not a primary intervention during an acute pulmonary embolism. Antibiotic therapy is relevant for infections but is not applicable in the context of thromboembolic events, where the primary issue is a blood clot rather than an infection. Therefore, thrombolytic therapy is the most appropriate treatment for cases of severe pulmonary embolism to effectively address the life-threatening condition.
